Overwhelmed

You know the saying "be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it?" That's me. Every program I applied to over the past month accepted me. Which is a no brainer, because I am so awesome. I was excited for a couple days and now the reality and self-doubt is starting to kick in. Sometimes I stop and ask myself "who am I kidding?" I'm not a genius. I struggle so hard to get the grades I do, and I still never have the highest A in the class. Whenever I think of someone with the title "Doctor" I think of a genius. I think of someone with a superior intellect. I don't think of a retard such as myself. I suppose I just have to trust that I wouldn't be thrown into these challenging situations if I wasn't cut out for it. Whenever I'm about to embark on something big, I always have freak outs and moments of self-doubt. I guess this is another one of those moments.

    Level: Genius

So you aren't a genius? Well only 2 percent of the entire population is sectioned off into the category 'genius.' That because an IQ test compares ones scores with the rest of the population (this is where the significance of the IQ test is derived from). I would include a picture, but I'll just post a URL since I'm not sure I can actually post a picture here.

That is the picture of the standard bell curve for an IQ test. As you can see only 2 percent of the population will receive a score of greater than or equal to 130. This is the true definition of a genius. It may surprise you, but most doctors, and I would argue a lot of PhD graduates, are not genius' since they would not score 130 or higher on an IQ test. Actually the 130 score is the cut off for the WAIS-IV, 132 is the cut off for the Stanford-Binet, and I believe 145 is the cut off for MENSA but would have to double check that one. And all tests are recognized by one another as being equally reliable (as far as I know) measures of intellect. I even read of a nobel laureate who claimed to only have an IQ measure to be 124 (I would include a reference but don't remember where I saw that, my apologies).

The point is that college tests your executive functioning more than your intellect. Executive functioning is your ability to plan, organize, and follow procedures and things of a similar nature. From the looks of it, you have that in abundance. I have read some of your posts and can relate to you. I struggle very much with school and have ADD traits (I was told it's not full blown ADD, but enough to get me a prescription from a psychiatrist for meds). Also, I have taken the WAIS-IV and did earn a score of 130, placing me in a seat along side geniuses with regard to intellectual status; however, I still find school extremely difficult and get frustrated with myself and lack of discipline. I think you have that though! I really looks like you do. Keep it up! And by that I don't mean keep up the 'good' work, because the work isn't always 'good.' It is sometimes a struggle and the tasks can seem so daunting. Keep doing that, keep struggling, and keep completing the tasks that seem so daunting. You'll come out a stronger M.D. because of it. You have potential, and you have more reason to believe in yourself than you acknowledge. You are not retarded, you are a normal pre-med student struggling just as much as your peers. It's always about hard work, and sometimes about intelligence. You have both an adamant work ethic (from what I can tell from your posts) and sharp intellect (again, from what little I know of you). Those are what will get you through your schooling. You already have the tools you require for sufficient success. Wish I could do more for ya. Good luck.
